Miniaturizing reality is highly common in the toy industry. Children love playing with toys that mimic the real world but in sizes much closer to their own. That is exactly what goes on in JoHan Model Kits. Based in Kentucky Jo-Han is a scale model kit manufacturing company that has been around since 1947.
When JoHan first set out to produce its scale model kits, aircraft was the first item of choice along with kitchens, car parts and so on. These models were used as promotional products and their success led to the production of model cars for major car companies such as GM and Chrysler.
Interestingly enough, JoHan was originally called the Ideal Toy Company but later had to change the name due to the already existing Ideal Toy Company. The company was founded by John Hanley who decided to combine his first and last name to create “JoHan”
Due to much success, JoHan began to make some production changes including the type of plastic used to create models.
Popularity of Model Kit Cars
During the 1950s and 60s, the production of model kit cars was tremendously popular. Those years were known as the “golden age” for model kit cars. Hobbyists took a great liking for these model kits due to their details, resemblance of actual cars and their exquisite beauty.
The 1963 Chrysler Turbine Cars were some of the most outstanding versions of model kit cars produced by JoHan. They were built just lie the real thing with all sorts of details such as opening doors, folding seats and more.
Other models included AMC, Cadillac, Oldsmobile, and Studebaker. Classic lovers back then, as well as today, enjoyed having these model kit cars. Some famous vintage cars include the 1956 Pontiac 4 door hardtop, 1963 Oldsmobile Starfire, 1959 Dodge Cusotom Royal, and the 1960 Cadillac Fleetwood. One of the last model kit cars to be made was the 1977 Cadillac, which was when the business of producing model cars began to dwindle.
The joy and excitement of having model kit cars and assembling them was a favorite pastime of the youth during these times. Today, these model kit cars produced by JoHan are timeless pieces of treasure cherished by current hobbyists and toy collectors.
