Hasbro is not only one of the largest toymakers in the world but it is also a leader in shaping popular toy culture. Some of the most recognized signature American toys have been products of Hasbro, including Mr. Potato Head, Transformers, and G.I. Joe. Children starting from their first year all the way up take pleasure in the possibilities that Hasbro creates.
Established in 1923, Hasbro was founded by the Hassenfeld brothers who were of Polish descent. It wasn’t until the 1930s when the Hassenfeld Brothers decided to manufacture toys. They started off making school supplies and decided to branch off.
One of the greatest successes of Hasbro has been the one and only Mr. Potato Head. Invented by George Lerner, Mr. Potato Head was introduced to the public in the early 1950s as a soft plastic potato with detachable facial features that can be altered into an abstract composition. Mr. Potato Head was the first advertised toy on television. Children love playing with the plastic potato model as it inspires creative imagination.
Now a major motion picture, G.I. Joe is a classic symbol of American heroism as well a line of military action figures. G.I. Joe was a hero and inspiration for many young boys. It was the male counterpart to Barbie. Not only was G.I. Joe a big hit in the US, but also across the globe in France and the United Kingdom.
Every little girl has dreamed of having her own pony. Hasbro was aware of this and produced the line of “My Little Pony” toys. These are colorful toy ponies with unique manes and symbols on their hips. The first ponies were produced in 1983 and became a major hit in the 80s. Animated series and an animated movie were inspired by this line.
In 1984, Hasbro bought Milton Bradley Company which is infamously known for producing classic games such as Candy Land, Twister, Yahtzee, Scrabble and Chutes and Ladders. Milton Bradley has been a pioneer game production company and is now recognized with Hasbro.
Standing strong right behind Mattel, Hasbro continues to be one of the most influential and inspiring toy companies in the world. It has invented a number of signature toy products over the course of history including board games, video games and toys for kids of all ages.
